Sunset isn’t necessarily known for its musical groups. The only acapella singing group that’s been available to audition for in the past has been Free to Breathe. This year, that’s no longer the case. An all-female group called the Sunsettes is ready to get singing. Last year, this independently led student quartet performed solid throwbacks like Mr. Sandman by the Chordettes. It was a small group act that many audience members quickly took notice to. The singing is driven mostly by timing, tone, and an ability to blend.

Although two of the original members are planning on leaving, they were adamant to fill the spots that they were leaving open to keep this group going. On October 7th during A.T. auditions were held in the choir room. Hopes were high for the few who auditioned and callbacks to see who could blend and work well together took place on October 9th. This is a small group may not get much attention, but they are sure to step up this year and grow more into their sound.

“I feel that people enjoy our attitudes and the nostalgia that we bring, especially [the] older folks in the audiences” commented Sierra Young. They practice independently, working with the choir director, Mr. Rust, only when they need the support. They do “timeless songs from the 30’s-60’s,” highlighting the balanced blending that makes for a satisfying old timey sound. Expect to see them in the variety show, but sooner performance dates are yet to be determined.
