On August 17, the American Idol Bus rolled into Portland to Pioneer Courthouse Square for young local singers to take a stab at singing fame. One of those locals was Sunset senior Duncan McHugh.

Singing became a hobby for McHugh long before Summer of 2017, before he was old enough to audition for any televised competition. His Dad, Michael McHugh, has been a singer for decades, and still plays in a band, and McHugh sang growing up with his Dad. “For my audition, I sang

a song called “What Are You Listening To?” by Chris Stapleton, and it’s one of the songs my dad and I listened to together when I was younger, which made the audition all the more special.”

The actual idea to audition began when McHugh was a kid. “I’ve watched it on TV forever, it was a goal of mine as a kid who was around a lot of singing growing up.” The action met the goal this last August.

The experience was like no other; McHugh stood in line with thousands of other young hopefuls in downtown Portland waiting their turn for 9 hours. Finally, he was called up with three others to sing his chosen piece, AKA a lot of build up for a short burst of relief.

While the results were not what he had hoped for, McHugh knew that he gave it his all. “In my group of 3, none of us got an automatic yes. We auditioned at 5 PM; after these judges had been listening since 8 AM, so we sang our pieces, they gave the no speech, and said that we could submit an online audition for reconsideration”.

McHugh says that he would do the audition again in a heartbeat, he may even do it again next year. As for now, he is focusing on local singing, with singing in Sunset’s Madrigals, the elite a cappella choir, and who have even been asked to sing at someone’s wedding reception!

For now, McHugh goals for singing remain large, and his passion for music will take him far. “Ive sang to and with a lot of people over the years. They say I sound like shawn mendes, so thats encouraging!
